Three Yorkshire clubs in the Championship got off to a strong start with 1-0 wins, but it was a harsh baptism to life in the Football League for York City.


Leeds United 1-0 Wolves

In the lunchtime kick-off, Luciano Becchio scored a 17th-minute header to hand Neil Warnock’s men three points.

Barnsley 1-0 Middlesbrough

Much-fancied Middlesbrough were downed by Keith Hill’s Barnsley as Craig Davies scores the only goal.

Reda Johnson’s injury-time goal capped a stirring comeback as the Owls rallied from 2-0 down to snatch a point.

David Cotterill scored a cheeky lob from just inside the opposition half as Rovers made the perfect start.

Gillingham 3-1 Bradford City

Nekhi Wells scores for the Bantams but it’s a long trip home after an opening-day defeat.

Rotherham United 3-0 Burton Albion

The perfect start for the Millers at their brand new New York Stadium in the town centre.

York City 1-3 Wycombe Wanderers

York play well but are taught a lesson in finishing on their return to the Football League for eight years.
