RESULT better than performance is a cliché aptly applied to City's win over the bottom club.
For, although the narrow victory brought to an end a run of four matches without a win, City's work was succinctly summed up by manager Peter Taylor, who said: "I am delighted with the three points, but not with the performance."
Leading scorer David Syers gave Bradford the perfect start with a stunning goal, unleashing a 25-yard right-foot shot that flew into the net off the inside of the post.
However, Taylor was critical at their failure to build on that bright opening by scoring the all-important second goal and City were glad to hear the final whistle as Hereford made a determined bid for a deserved late equaliser.
"I felt we had two very good opportunities to score a second goal," said Taylor, "but Tom Adeyemi and Omar Daley missed our best chances. If we had scored again I think we could have pushed on, but when it is 1-0 it is a very close situation and that is why you need a second goal. Hereford were miles better than us in the second half."
Adeyemi put Daley through on goal in the 17th minute, but the Jamaican international could not control the ball and the chance was wasted. Then Adeyemi missed a chance 12 minutes later when he was put through with only Adam Bartlett to beat, but was twice denied by the goalkeeper.
City's best second-half effort came in the 61st minute when Daley's 30-yard shot rebounded off a post into the path of Adeyemi, whose shot was saved. Hereford then seized the initiative.
Nicky Featherstone had given City a warning by firing against the upright in the 54th minute and there were more anxious moments as City struggled to hang to their slender lead.
