Alan Connell ensured Bradford City warmed up for Tuesday’s Capital One quarter final against Arsenal with a hard fought victory.

The substitute struck with just five minutes to go courtesy of a superbly curled effort from the edge of the area to condemn ten man Torquay to defeat.

City were full value for the three points after dominating the second half as Nahki Wells struck a post and several of his teammates also went close.

The first half saw Gulls defender guilty of elbowing James Meredith in the 34th minute, just moments after his the visitors had been given a free kick and referee Darren Bond had no hesitation in sending him off.

Despite being a man down, Torquay came within an inch of breaking the deadlock when substitute Niall Thompson drilled a long shot against the post.

For Bradford James Hanson also struck the woodwork with a header from two yards out while the striker also brought a flying save from goalkeeper Michael Poke.
