Burnely 1 Peterborough 1: Rodriguez spares Clarets blushes with late solo intervention
Jay Rodriguez’s stunning late solo goal stole a draw for Burnley – but the Clarets were left ruing a penalty decision that went against them.
Burnley assistant manager Jason Tindall claimed his side could have won it had their penalty claims for handball against Mark Little been given.
“Yes I felt it should have been a penalty,” said Tindall. “If you raise your arms in the 18-yard-box then you’re asking for trouble.
“At one point we thought we were just not going to score, with the chances we had and didn’t take. But in the end Jay has come up with a bit of magic and scored a spectacular goal.
“We’re pleased we got something from the game, as I believe it would have been tragic if we had come away with nothing.”
Darren Ferguson’s Posh looked destined to claim their first Championship win since Boxing Day when Paul Taylor took advantage of a defensive error to score in the 12th minute. David Ball also rattled the post as the visitors posed plenty of problems in the opening stages.
Ferguson said: “We were in such control in the first half, but we were so careless in the last third. The game should have been over before half-time.
“When you’re on top, especially at this level, you need to take your chances, and we were really careless with the final ball.
“Defensively it was a really poor goal to concede – there’s no way he should be scoring from there.
“It would have been a massive three points – any three points is big. But it stops the rot (of three defeats).”
Charlie Austin had a 69th-minute effort from a Josh McQuoid cross headed off the line as Burnley pressed in the second half. Tindall added: “It wouldn’t be right to blame the conditions – they were the same for both sides.”
