Cambridge United 2 Doncaster Rovers 3: Darren Ferguson's men pull away to end winless streak

Doncaster Rovers finally got back to winning ways at Cambridge United.

Since impressively winning five games on the bounce at the turn of the year, the table-topping Rovers had not won a game all month.

However, a quick-fire first-half double from Tommy Rowe and Mathieu Baudry – and a John Marquis penalty – ensured Rovers opened up a 12-point gap on fourth-placed Portsmouth.

George Maris and Luke Berry set up a nervy ending with late consolations, but Rovers tightened their grip on top spot.

The hosts were awarded an early penalty as goalkeeper Ian Lawlor hauled down Ben Williamson, but former Barnsley midfielder Berry missed.

Ten minutes later Rowe rifled home his third goal in four games as he curled home after cutting onto his right foot.

And the visitors’ lead was doubled through Baudry, as he turned home Conor Grant’s ball.

Rovers were just as assertive after the restart. Grant hit a free-kick over the bar before the visitors were awarded a penalty 20 minutes from time.

Marquis calmly stepped up to dispatch his 20th goal of the season – and his ninth of 2017.

With 12 minutes left Maris hit a long-range strike, before Berry headed home in stoppage-time.
