DONCASTER ROVERS are on the verge of securing promotion back to League One at the first time of asking after John Marquis’s hat-trick helped them to a thumping 5-1 win at Grimsby and moved them six points clear at the top.

Sam Jones’s strike put the Mariners ahead but Rovers were level when Andy Williams’s dummy allowed Marquis to slot home.

A superb header from Marquis gave the visitors a half-time lead and it was three just after the hour when the striker burst through to complete his hat-trick with his 26th goal of the season.

Williams grabbed the fourth and Alfie May bundled in a fifth late on to leave Doncaster two points away from securing a top-three place and promotion back to the third tier.

Plymouth, who were 1-0 winners at Doncaster last time out, slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to in-form Accrington.
