McSheffrey came off with a knee injury in the first half of last weekend’s 2-0 win over former club Coventry City and has returned to parent club Scunthorpe United for treatment.

The 33-year-old, a free agent in the summer, will be present supporting Rovers in their crunch penultimate match of the season at Crewe, as Ferguson’s side aim for a victory to keep their hopes of survival alive going into the final weekend of the campaign.

“The boy was playing well, with six assists and one goal and brought real quality to us.

“We have to get on with it, but Gary is clearly a player we have enjoyed working with and he undeRstands exactly how we wanted to play and really enjoyed it.

“We are both open to talking when the season is over about maybe making it permanent.

“He’s out of contract and the boy really enjoyed it here and had a good time.”
