Doncaster Rovers v Blackpool: Rovers may be able to profit from Pompey’s financial misfortunes

Portsmouth’s likely lurch back into administration could offer Doncaster Rovers a helping hand in the race for survival.

Pompey are facing a 10-point deduction after the club’s advisers confirmed they are seeking to go into administration.

It will be the second time in as many years that the club has been forced down this route.

Portsmouth face a winding-up hearing next week over an unpaid tax bill and have not been able to pay their players and staff for January.

The 10-point deduction would see them drop to fourth bottom, juts a point above second-bottom Doncaster.

Given the run Rovers have been on – their last win was January 2 – they may need all the help they can get as they attempt to stave off the threat of relegation.

Rovers yesterday continued their squad strengthening for the run-in with the capture of Habib Beye on an 18-month contract.

Beye, 34, had his contract cancelled by previous club Aston Villa at the start of February.

The Senegal international, who cites Newcastle United, Paris St Germain and Marseille among his former clubs, has been on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium since November, playing nine times in the heart of Rovers’ defence.

Blackpool are unbeaten in all competitions this year, a sequence that includes six wins and three draws.

Meanwhile, Rovers – who have not played for a fortnight due to the weather – will now host Reading on Tuesday, March 13, (7.45pm) in the rearranged fixture.

Last six games: Doncaster LWLDLD, Blackpool WDWWWD.

Last meeting: Doncaster 3 Blackpool 3; Oct 31, 2009; Championship.

Referee: G Sutton (Lincolnshire).
