IF you are of a certain Yorkshire footballing persuasion, then the weekend was not half bad, was it? Less so for some others...

What about an encore with an all-singing and dancing full EFL programme tonight? We will see.

Here are five pre-match observations:

1: Leeds United v Fulham. The need to avoid another early-season drama.

Let’s face it, we have been here before... Leeds United potentially under the pump while the cricket season is reaching its climax.

The need for the soothing balm - well sort of - of a first win of the season against Matt Smith’s Fulham tonight is important for all manner of reasons. A bit of respite would be nice.

To do that, Leeds must significantly improve on a second-half against Birmingham which was like a dirge. No urgency, quality and cohesion and pretty worrying at that. It made a total mockery of Garry Monk’s declared desire to turn Elland Road into a ‘fortress.’

We will find out plenty about United’s players this evening, even so early in the season. Can they man up as Monk put it after the game on Saturday? They have to..

2: Burton Albion v Sheffield Wednesday. Fessi or no Fessi...

Fernando Forestieri has apologised for his refusal to play at Norwich, but whether he returns to the fold and features for Sheffield Wednesday at Burton tonight is another thing entirely.

Carlos Carvalhal was non-committal yesterday, only saying that the 26-year-old has said sorry and is to be disciplined.

The Owls head coach clearly abhors any lapses in professionalism and sees it as the worst possible sin.

Good player that Forestieri is, the team is everything for the Portuguese. He simply cannot abide individualism, it is all about the collective.

It remains to be seen whether Forestieri’s contrite comments bring an early return to the Owls’ line-up as Carvalhal clearly has ultra-high standards when it comes to codes of professional conduct from his players.

3: Aston Villa v Huddersfield Town. Terriers go big-game hunting again.

Town fans are still basking in the glow of their best league result for many a year, certainly since returning to the second tier, with their win in front of over 52,000 fans at Newcastle United being the stand-out result of the inaugural EFL Championship.

Next up, another ‘beast’ of a club in Aston Villa at another famous old stadium with Town visiting Villa Park for the first time since Christmas 1987.

Town have six points already in the bank. It took them until mid-September to reach that tally last year, so in theory they already have a month’s credit.

If they can be as diligent, obdurate, hard-working and as organised as they were on Saturday and as piercing on the break, do not discount another surprise. Town look onto something.

4: Brighton v Rotherham. A case for the defence.

Alan Stubbs’s desire for the Millers to be expansive from the back is admirable. But as a former defender, he will fully know the merits of a good, old-fashioned solid clean sheet.

For the Millers to get one at Brighton would represent an outstanding achievement. To do that, concentration and organisation must improve massively. The Millers have already shipped some poor soft goals this term, without not being exactly cut apart and it is a worrying sign. A back-to-basics performance might just be required tonight.

5: Second chance for Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers.

The home hangover from last season has unfortunately continued for the Blades and Rovers and early character tests ensue tonight.

The need to be proactive and on the front foot is required and both sets of players need to make things happen. No-one said it is easy, but that is the challenge. Messrs Wilder and Ferguson will be looking for their leaders tonight.
