Five things we learned from Yorkshire's footballing weekend

That said, it was a far from vintage weekend for the Steel City, with the League One table making for particularly gloomy and unpalatable reading for Sheffield United punters today. But it is early days.

Elsewhere, the landscape was far prettier. Rotherham United, Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers all fared positively and, well, what about Hull City and Middlesbrough up there in the top tier.

Here’s the tale of the tape, with five post-match observations ...

1: A dream Premier League start for Hull City and life also pretty sweet for Middlesbrough

Hands up who thought Hull City would be sitting pretty at the top of the table with an unblemished 100 per cent record alongside Pep’s Manchester City and Jose’s Manchester United? Still cannot see any hands.

Hull collectively rolled up their sleeves and dug out a priceless away win at Swansea to back up the stellar highs of beating the champions Leicester City, with their unquenchable spirit again rising to the fore. It can take you far.

Next up, it’s Manchester United. A fixture that Hull were entitled to dread a few weeks back. A bit more positivity now.

Boro, meanwhile, secured a sweet derby victory at Sunderland, thanks to a fine Cristhian Stuani as they continue to acquit themselves well back in the big time as they clinched their first away success in the Premier League since November 2008 as they ended a run of 12 successive away defeats in the top-flight.. Happy days.

2: Leeds have lift-off, but concerns for Sheffield Wednesday

Not too many would have plumped for a 2-0 away win ahead of kick-off against a Wednesday side who had only been beaten once on home soil since the end of August 2015, almost a year ago.

Garry Monk’s decision to switch his entire midfield and bring in Liam Bridcutt, Ronaldo Vieira, Hadi Sacko and Alex Mowatt looked very bold and a little risky. But he reaped dividends on a day when Leeds possessed more energy and vigour than the Owls, who lost their way in the restart. The first trances of the Monk playing style also came to the fore.

It leaves Carlos Carvalhal to mull over the rare and unwanted sensation of back-to-back defeats for the first time in over a year. A reaction will be expected.

3: The derby honours for Huddersfield Town, but Barnsley should not be alarmed

Another late, late show was delivered by Town in the shape of an unlikely scorer in Jonathan Hogg, with David Wagner’s side on the crest of a king-sized wave and two points clear at the summit with ten points. It took them until to September 24 to reach that total last year.

Town showed their character and persistence once more, with their fitness and confidence levels obviously sky-high.

Barnsley also played their part in a watchable derby and despite being edged out, there were no reasons for recriminations afterwards. The Reds have made a pretty seamless step up.

4: Bradford City kick on, as do Doncaster Rovers

Another stand-out win for Bradford City, the first in a fine week, with the weekend victory over Coventry City being all the more sweet, given that City did it the hard way after trailing at the interval. There’s certainly nothing wrong with the spirit and morale in the claret-and-amber camp and glimpses of quality were also on show.

For Doncaster, back-to-back league wins has injected considerable momentum, with John Marquis being the match-winner for the second time in five days. The sight of a clean sheet and no further injuries will have also been greeted like manna from heaven from Darren Ferguson.

5: A tough start for Sheffield United

When it rains, it pours.

After a desperate night against Southend in midweek, the Blades arrived at Millwall with searching questions to answer in terms of their character - and while their fortitude was much improved at the New Den, they went away with nothing after the hosts fired home a late penalty winner.

Chris Wilder admits he is hurting at the sight of the Blades, his club lest we forget, propping up League One. He will be entrusted with finding the answers after acknowledging that the position is nowhere near good enough. How the Blades need to chisel out a priceless three points from somewhere, however it arrives. Time to close ranks.
