The Championship promotion chasers have received a timely boost with the news that German-born Kachunga, who has enjoyed an outstanding first season in English football, has agreed a three-year deal with Town.

The 24-year-old, who joined on a season-long loan from Bundesliga outfit FC Ingolstadt last June, will be officially become a permanent Town player on July 1, with the deal lasting until the summer of 2020.

Kachunga, currently on international business with DR Congo after being called up for the first time by the African nation for the friendly against Kenya in Nairobi on Sunday, has struck 11 times in an impressive maiden season in West Yorkshire and head coach Wagner is delighted that the crowd favourite is joining the club for the long haul.

The news will be firmly echoed by Town supporters, with the fee also representing a bargain amount for a player who has proved himself to be a key figure in the club’s emergence as the Championship’s undoubted surprise package in 2016-17.

On the full-time addition former Germany Under-21 forward, Wagner said: “I know he is a very popular man with the players and fans, so completing this move is a great day for the club.

“The most exciting thing is that I believe, at 24 years old, there is still more to come from Elias.

“I said in the summer that this move was perfect for the club and the player, as the loan gave everyone the chance to see how Elias would adapt to English football. I think it is now correct to say he has adapted well.

“His style of play suits the English style perfectly. He has shown that he has learned from some early experiences in his career to become a better player.

“It is more remarkable that he came to us as a competitor at number nine, but has made the place on the right of midfield his own through his performances.”

The capture of Kachunga represents the fifth time in Town’s history that the club have broken the seven-figure mark to sign a player after the previous signings of Chris Schindler, Nahki Wells, George Donis and Marcus Stewart.
