Count me in: Nahki Wells commits short-term future to Huddersfield Town

NAHKI WELLS has ended speculation of a possible move away from Huddersfield Town during the January transfer window by pledging: 'I can guarantee I will be here until the end of the season.'

The Bermuda international, whose deal expires in the summer of 2018, has been watched by a host of potential suitors over the past 12 months.

Fulham and Derby County were both understood to have been keen on Wells, who turned down the offer of a new contract at the John Smith’s Stadium last summer.

However, in a clear message to those hoping to lure him away this month, Wells is adamant Huddersfield’s burgeoning promotion push is his only focus.

“I can guarantee I will be here until the end of the season,” he said. “That’s for sure. In football, the better you do, the better it is for the club and the more interest there is from elsewhere. That is just standard.

“I still have my targets, individually and as a club. But the main thing is collectively what we do and the goal is to finish in a promotion place.”

Wells has netted 46 times for Huddersfield since joining from Bradford City in a club-record deal in January, 2014.

Due to clauses related to goals and appearances, the Bantams are understood to have banked around £1.6m from the deal. A hefty sell-on clause was also included in Wells’ transfer from Valley Parade, meaning any hopes of Bradford cashing in by the sale of their former player are also on hold.

Town host Ipswich Town tomorrow and David Wagner, who has confirmed his interest in RB Leipzig striker Terrence Boyd, is expecting a tough game from a team knocked out of the FA Cup by non-League Lincoln City in midweek. “We will be fully prepared to work,” he said.

Town are without Kasey Palmer and the suspended Jack Payne for a fixture that club officials hope can draw a 20,000 plus crowd for the third consecutive home game – something that has not happened since the 1970s.

“The support will be vital on Saturday,” added Wagner, who welcomes back Rajiv van La Parr and Jonathan Hogg from injury. “These are the games where the atmosphere created by the fans can make a real difference to the team.”
