The 25-year-old has been on the radar of the Premier League newboys all summer after an impressive first season at Oakwell.

A fee was agreed after the Reds had earlier rejected a couple of offers but the deal broke down in midweek.

Asked about the unexpected development, Wagner said today: “I don’t like to go into details because he isn’t our player. But it wasn’t a financial reason, either between us and the player or Barnsley and us.

“Everything else should be answered by Barnsley or the player, why we are not able to come together.

“The deal is dead, in this window the deal will not happen.”

Suggestions have been made that Yiadom’s medical was the problem but Wagner would not be drawn on the subject.

“He isn’t our player,” said the Terriers chief. “This is something for Barnsley to answer.”

As for Town’s recruitment plans before the window closes on August 31, Wagner added: “Yes we have our eyes on the market, this is our job, it could happen in both directions - both in and out - in the next couple of weeks.

“For all of us, the next games are very important. Like our first game against Crystal Palace gave us a better picture, a better idea about the posibillity of players competing in this division.

“Pre-season was important but competitive games give you the right picture in detail. That is why it is so important to play the game on Sunday and the cup game on Wednesday.

“Then, Southampton before the window closes. We need these games to get our heads around what we need to do, both ins and outs.”
