Hull City 0 Crawley Town 1: Tigers victim of FA Cup giantkilling
HULL CITY were knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two Crawley Town on a dramatic afternoon at the KC Stadium, writes Chris Waters.
A 57th minute goal from Matt Tubbs settled the fourth round tie as the visitors ran out deserved winners.
Tubbs latched on to a through ball by Sergio Torres to slot home right-footed from 12 yards.
Crawley had further chances to score as Hull were second best to their lowly opponents.
After a lacklustre first half, Hull made a bright start to the second period and almost took the lead in the 49th minute.
Tom Cairney’s 25-yard shot was heading for the top left-hand corner before goalkeeper Scott Shearer flung himself to his right to turn it behind.
Moments later, half-time substitute Aaron Mclean had a presentable chance for the home team but blazed over from the edge of the box.
At that stage, a sustained period of Hull pressure seemed likely but Crawley stormed their way back into the contest.
In the 52nd minute, Pablo Mills’s shot was turned round the post by Vito Mannone, who then had to be alert to palm a 40-yard shot from Kyle McFadzean over the bar.
McFadzean then headed just wide from a long throw before Crawley took the lead.
Tubbs fired confidently past Mannone, the ball ricocheting into the net off goalkeeper Mannone.
The hosts almost levelled three minutes later but Richard Garcia’s close-range shot was brilliantly diverted behind by Shearer, who had an outstanding afternoon between the posts.
Crawley almost doubled their advantage on 77 when Tyrone Barnett’s goalbound shot was blocked by Joe Dudgeon, Sanchez Watt sending a follow-up shot against the post.
