Clark is not flattered by Leeds link

LEE CLARK believes speculation linking him with Leeds United is proof of the good job he is doing at Huddersfield Town.

The 39-year-old, in his fourth year at the Galpharm Stadium, was targeted by Leicester earlier in the season but opted to stay at Town.

Clark’s rejection of a move to the Championship has, however, not prevented him joining Neil Warnock and Roberto Di Matteo as a favourite to succeed Simon Grayson at Elland Road.

As revealed in yesterday’s Yorkshire Post, United have no plans to approach anyone until after the weekend at the earliest due to wanting to sift through the applications.

Clark said: “I am aware of the speculation but, like last time (with Leicester), ultimately what it means is people outside the club think I am doing a good job.

“Not just the results, but my record in the transfer market. I can spot a player and make money for clubs. The squad I have got now, we would be looking at £10m if I put them on the market. Compared to the squad I inherited, which didn’t have any value, it shows what has been done here. The corporate side of the club is going through the roof and that is down to how the team plays. I am not a bad manager really, that is why people are interested.”

Clark made a point of stressing during his weekly press call yesterday that there had been no approach from Leeds before adding: “Until I am told otherwise, I am the manager of Huddersfield Town. I don’t find it flattering as it is something I have been used to since a boy. When I was 14, I was captain of England Schoolboys and Newcastle turned down a £250,000 bid for me from Liverpool. I have talked about something similar with regards the players in the past (during the transfer window). If my name was not being bandied about then I would be under pressure because it would mean I am not doing my job.”

Huddersfield have made a point of not discussing any speculation concerning their manager publicly whenever his name has been linked with a move away, instead preferring to wait until an approach is made before making any comment.

Asked if he had spoken to chairman Dean Hoyle since talk of Leeds began, Clark said: “No, I haven’t spoken to him. I can’t keep coming out and making statements. Everyone knows what I think about the club. If I keep making statements, where will it all end?”

Clark was at one point about to be sacked by Huddersfield, and then Jordan Rhodes decided to score a minimum of 4 goals per game!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, but for that reason I'm out - Clark minus Rhodes equals mediocre at best.

well said jonno63. look at jose mourhino for an example and look what he has done in the game. im not saying that clark would be ideal for us because nobody can be sure. to say no because he is a cocky, confident fella is the wrong way to choose a new manager though. with regard to clark though i have to point out that he has been backed to the hilt by their chairman (wish we had him!) over the last 3 years and they are still in the same position. yes they didnt lose for all those games but they are still league 1!

Had to comment on waflufc. You're really missing the point here. We shouldn't care if the next manager is confident and can spot a player, or believes in his own abilities and gets the whole club doing exactly what he wants, we shouldn't care if he's outspoken and arrogant either. We'd all love to come to ER and see a Leeds team play great football under the new managers stewardship. I also don't mind if the players fear him, if they do what he wants. Overpaid ( yes even at Leeds they're well paid, what else would they do? Brainsurgery? Rocket scientist?) pampered players looking awful at times, hanging their track suit manager out to dry? Surely Grayson is a case in point? We don't need to take our new manager home to mother, or admire how humble he is, we WANT HIM TO WIN. Also your inference about "big heads", Clough came to the top side in the land, and tried to stamp his authority. It backfired on him. I can see what he felt he had to do, and I can see why it failed. Look what he later? I watched Forest win 2 European cups with a big head in charge. Personally, I loved him. This country is about as spineless as it's ever been, football epitomizes this perfectly. There is nothing worse than bankers and football. Football used to be for the people, but those days are long gone, how much is a ticket here? We sure as hell shouldn't be picky about who comes next. Some of our fans need to wake up. I wanted Grayson to go, as he wasn't doing it. I hope we get the next choice right. We need to. If a new Clough came here, we'd love him within a fortnight. People need guts and vision now more than ever, and arrogance may need to be part of the package. Lets hope for Leeds' sake we can catch one of those.

Jesus this bloke likes to blow his own trumpet, not to sure I would like to see him at ER with an ego like that who needs Ken Bates. We had a big Ed at ER some years ago and look what happened there. No thanks Clarke. JOG ON FELLA.
