I'll be back at Leeds United tomorrow insists '˜hurting' Evans, as queue forms to take his place

STEVE EVANS has reiterated his desire to remain as Leeds United's head coach amid suggestions Milton Keynes Dons manager Karl Robinson last week met Massimo Cellino to discuss a possible switch to Elland Road.

Evans returns today from a short holiday abroad hoping to learn whether his contract will be extended beyond the end of next month.

The Scot has not had any contact with the club, who are believed to be casting their eye over a number of potential candidates, including former Leeds favourite John Sheridan and Bristol Rovers’ Darrell Clarke.

Robinson is understood to be the latest to pop up on United’s radar and it is believed a meeting took place between the Dons chief and Cellino in London last Friday.

Despite that, Evans remains hopeful of having his reign extended.

“I am still waiting for the decision for next season from Mr Cellino and the board,” said the 53-year-old. “I fully understand they are hectic with a number of things, but I would expect to hear very soon. I will be back to work on Wednesday. There is still lots to be done because I am employed by a great club and I must continue to work.

“To deliver promotion you must plan. The Leeds United supporters deserve a promotion season and I am ready, better than ever physically and mentally, to deliver that.

“We need to help the squad by adding five or six quality players who will know the challenge when they arrive at Elland Road. I have a pre-season schedule ready to go and I have a list of players. Most of them I have discussed previously with Mr Cellino and he liked my vision.

“I am hurting at not knowing my future, but I have always respected the right of club owners to make the big decisions in a time and manner that suits them. I have been patient, but inside me is a burning desire to attack the new season.”

Evans took charge at Elland Road in October following the dismissal of Uwe Rosler.

Meanwhile, Evans’s former club Rotherham United are continuing their search for a new manager following Neil Warnock’s decision to step aside.

The 67-year-old saved the Millers from relegation in the Championship, but last week left to pursue other opportunities.

Rotherham are understood to have begun the interviews for the club’s fourth manager of the past year after being inundated with applications.
