STEVE Evans has vehemently denied approaching chairman Massimo Cellino about taking the Leeds United head coach’s position while Uwe Rosler was still in charge.

Reports have suggested that former Rotherham United boss Evans had been in touch with Cellino while former head coach Rosler was still in his position but Evans strongly denied any such suggestions.

The new head coach said Cellino approached him late on Saturday evening, with Evans also revealing that he specifically sought assurances that the head coach’s position was vacant before talks proceeded.

Asked if he had emailed Cellino while Rosler was still in his role, Evans said: “I have seen all those reports and I only want to answer this once and once only and then let’s let it dry - I have never emailed Massimo Cellino in my life.

“So let’s finish that.

“The other point of view in terms of when I was in contact with Mr Cellino was late on Saturday evening when he spoke to me and asked me if I could attend a meeting on Sunday.

“I’ll finish on this point and totally finish on the subject - my first question to the owner on Sunday was ‘have you a head coach in place? when I met him.

“He said no. The meeting started.”
