Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt played an integral role in England Under-20s 2-1 win over the USA in front of 11,000 in Plymouth this afternoon.
Coach Aidy Boothroyd made 10 changes from the side that beat Mexico 4-2 on penalties last Wednesday, and that, coupled with the conditions meant both sides struggled to settle early on.
Once into their stride, though, England could and perhaps should have gone on to win the contest far more comfortably than they did.
Mowatt didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet during his 79-minute stint for the national side, but he did have a couple of worthy efforts on goal, the second after terrific work on the left wing by Harry Toffolo.
England’s goals came from John Swift and Kwame Thomas and despite a late USA strike England held on to record the victory.
