Leeds United raise contract offer to try tie Chris Wood down amid Burnley interest

Leeds rejected two bids in excess of £10 million from the Premier League side last week and have remained defiant that the 30-goal hitman will remain at Elland Road after the summer transfer window closes.

Wood's current deal runs to 2019 having signed a four-year contract when he moved to United from Leicester City in 2015.

The New Zealand striker scored 30 goals for Leeds last season and registered his only goal of the current campaign in the 3-2 opening win at Bolton Wanderers.

Leeds have insisted Wood is not for sale despite reports Burnley are prepared to increase their offer to £20million.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche stepped up his interest in Wood following the £18 million sale of Andre Gray to Watford earlier this month.

The Turf Moor club began the bidding last week with a £12m plus add-ons offer and increased their valuation after Leeds refused to consider the initial approach.

United turned down Burnley’s second bid on Tuesday, prior to their Championship game against Fulham, and are now looking to extend the striker’s existing deal which runs until 2019.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Sunderland, head coach Thomas Christiansen warned again that cashing in on the New Zealand international - the scorer of 30 goals last season - would be a mistake.

The boss said: “My intention is to keep Chris with us. I believe more in the player than in the money and I believe that he can help the team to achieve our goals.

“Finally, what will happen, we will see but the club have made a good effort and offer to keep him.

“I’ve been speaking to him about the situation and telling him to be focused on what he has to do - be 100 per cent in the game against Sunderland, forget about all the rumours and try to do his best on the pitch. It will all be for his benefit.”
