Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has emerged as a possible signing for Leeds United after joining the Elland Road club on trial.

Alnwick - a free agent after leaving St James’ Park - linked up with Leeds last week with United head coach Uwe Rosler searching for a back-up keeper.

Italian Marco Silvestri is set to start the new season as Leeds’ first choice but the club are attempting to bring in cover for the 24-year-old, despite the arrival of Charlie Horton from Cardiff City last month.

Horton, 20, is expected to feature more heavily for the club’s development squad in the campaign ahead.

Leeds have shown an interest in Barnsley’s Ross Turnbull, who has one year left on his contract, but they are yet to make a formal approach for him.

Alnwick is available on a free transfer after failing to secure a new deal at Newcastle.

The 22-year-old made seven appearances for Newcastle last season, stepping into the breach after an injury crisis robbed the club of senior keepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot.
