LEEDS legend Eddie Gray says only wins will do despite a sticky upcoming fixture list beginning with today’s Championship visit of leaders Derby County.
United face three teams from the top eight in their next four fixtures with today’s hosting of Derby proceeded by the following weekend’s trip to fourth-placed Ipswich Town.
After another potentially tricky hosting of pre-season promotion fancies Fulham, United then travel to eighth-placed Nottingham Forest.
Gray knows draws would normally be seen as decent outcomes in the clashes against Ipswich and Derby - but the former Whites winger says three-point hauls are imperative with Leeds now just two points above the drop zone in 16th.
Gray was encouraged by United’s first half performance in last weekend’s gut-wrenching 2-1 loss at Blackburn Rovers - but admits scant encouragement can be taken from looking at the Championship table meaning immediate victories are a must.
“There were encouraging signs at Blackburn, but it’s not very encouraging when you look at the table now,” admitted Gray.
“You’ve got to pick the points up.
“Normally, if you draw at Blackburn and you drew with Derby and drew away at Ipswich, it would be three good points.
“But in the grand scale of things we’re in a position where we need to win games to pull away from the bottom of the table and I think the main concern is that we get a couple of wins under our belt so you do push away from the bottom of that table.
“You don’t want to be hovering around there come the turn of the year.
“Derby is going to be a tough game and Derby won at Watford on Saturday who are fancied by people to be up there and Derby are doing well.
“You’ve just got to look at it from the point of view that we have got to go out and perform as well we performed for the first half on Saturday and hope we get a result.
“It will be a tough task against a Derby side that are flying high but there’s no reason why at Elland Road that we cannot go out and beat Derby.
“You couldn’t go out into the game and say we are going to pick three points up here as you playing against a side that are flying high in the league.
“But by the same token, most of the sides in this league are beatable.”
