Police, who are are investigating the incident, two nights ago, in the town of Giulianova on Italy’s Adriatic coast, believe it could have been started deliberately.

Antenucci was with the Leeds team on the day, where his ninth goal of the season sealed a 2-1 win at Blackburn.

His Land Rover was reported to have been parked near his house for several months. Reports said it was quickly engulfed in flames. Firefighters were alerted by neighbours.

Antenucci’s possible return to Italy has been the subject of speculation in Leeds. Last month, his agent insisted today that the striker was happy at Leeds despite clear suggestions in January that he wanted a move to Italy.

Antenucci, whose contract at Elland Road ends in June, is understood to have told United that he wished to go home to Italy during the January window after his partner gave birth to their second child.
