LEEDS United will spend part of pre-season in Sardinia if new owner Massimo Cellino follows through with preliminary plans for his first summer in charge at Elland Road.

Cellino wants United’s squad to complete a period of training in Assemini, the location of a sports complex used by his Italian club Cagliari.

Leeds are in the early stages of drawing up a pre-season schedule after last weekend’s 2-0 win over Blackpool guaranteed their Championship status for another year. Cellino, who was instrumental in the construction of Cagliari’s training ground but is now trying to sell the Serie A club to a group of American investors, said: “I’d love to bring Leeds to Assemini for pre-season training.

“We’ll see what happens.”

United have one summer friendly arranged already after agreeing to play Glenavon as part of the deal which brought teenage striker Robbie McDaid to Elland Road last month.

The club spent 10 days of pre-season in Slovenia last year, playing three matches and training in Kidricevo, a small village in the east of the country.
