united legend’s shirt just the charity ticket

FOOTBALL fans are being offered a unique opportunity to win a rare item of memorabilia belonging to Norman Hunter.

The former Leeds United and England defender has joined together with the Myasthenia Gravis Association by donating an official Professional Football Association framed shirt to be raffled in an attempt to raise substantial funds for the charity. Hunter’s prize has been valued and estimated at up to £20,000.

He was presented with the shirt in recognition of being named the first PFA Player of the Year in 1973-74, pictured above. The PFA handed over the framed shirt as part of their centenary celebrations in 1997 to all the previous Player of the Year winners.

Only four sets of shirts per winner were made or will be made. The PFA own one shirt, the second was sold at a charity auction held at the PFA Centenary Banquet and the third went to the respective winner.

The final shirt is now being offered for public raffle with proceeds going to the charity chosen by the individual player, which in Hunter’s case is the Myasthenia Gravis Association.

His daughter Claire suffers from the condition – which is a muscle weakness disease that has no known cure and can prove fatal – and the family have had tremendous support and help from the charity. Any funds raised will be used by the Leeds & District branch of the charity, where Claire is secretary.

The shirt consists of two halves, one each in the colours of United and England. Norman’s signature is also embroidered on the shirt between badges of Leeds and England along with a printed profile of his career.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has signed a certificate of authenticity.

The prize winner will be presented with the shirt before the first home game at Elland Road next season. Tickets, which are on sale until June 29, cost £2 each and are available online http://rogavi.com/charity/myasthenia-gravis/

Paper tickets are available from the charity by calling 01332 290 219 or by writing to Myasthenia Gravis Association, College Business Centre, Uttoxeter New Road, Derby. DE22 3WZ. The draw will be made on July 2.
