Leon Wobschall: All Leeds United and Huddersfield Town eyes fixed on the Amex

IT is not just Tyneside and Sussex which has a vested interest in what is probably the Championship's biggest game so far this season between Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United at the Amex Stadium tonight.

Try West Yorkshire, too.

For the uninitiated, Brighton host Newcastle United and it is probably correct in assuming that a draw would go down rather well with the Shrove Tuesday pancakes for Huddersfield Town and Leeds United supporters.

Maybe Sheffield Wednesday fans too, although they have other things to worry about on their plate at the minute, let’s face it.

A victory for Brighton and they would be well placed to set sail towards the Premier League pastures at a fair rate of knots.

After Newcastle, their list of home games read: Derby, Blackburn, Birmingham, Wigan and Bristol City. Winnable, it is fair to say.

As for away games, the ones that stick out in terms of difficulty are Leeds and Norwich away. Nothing too treacherous otherwise.

Newcastle perhaps look the more vulnerable, with trips to the John Smith’s Stadium and Hillsborough to come and home games before season’s end against Leeds and away-day specialists Barnsley.

Dark horses Fulham and Preston also have yet to visit Tyneside, where the Magpies have lost four league games this season.

Huddersfield supporters in the Oakwell away end are certainly spying nerves in the North East, with cries of ‘Newcastle United, we’re coming for you’ emanating from the Town end in the first half on Saturday, with David Wagner’s side 1-0 up and the Geordies trailing 2-0.

In the event, the chorus was a bit presumptious, if not quite La La Land. Those chants quickly died out on the restart as developments took a separate turning. Let’s see what Tuesday brings ... and then Saturday.

While Huddersfield hosting Newcastle will rightly assume top billing in the Championship stakes at the weekend, Wednesday against Norwich will not be too far behind.

The weekend derby at Elland Road may have been a biggie for the sixth-placed Owls, but their next assignment with the Canaries is perhaps more important in the context of the season as a whole.

A win over eighth-placed Norwich would extend the gap between Wednesday and the Canaries to a healthy nine points. Lose and it is a whole different ball game.

Factor in also Fulham, who have four home matches out of five in March. Coincidentally, they visit Hillsborough on the final day ... #justsayin
