Middlesbrough fans will hope new £1m signing Albert Adomah can pick up where he left off last season and be the scourge of northern defences.

Of the winger’s seven goals last season for Bristol City, he scored against Middlesbrough twice, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, Burnley and Blackburn.

Now wearing the red of Boro, he looks set to make his debut at Charlton Athletic after signing a three-year deal at the Riverside.

Boro chief executive Neil Bausor said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have completed the signing of such a talented player who we believe can really excite our fans.”

Boro fans have had little to celebrate this year, including a 2-1 defeat on the opening day of the season against Leicester, but Adomah could prove a crucial signing over the course of the season, according to manager Tony Mowbray.

“He’ll be a welcome addition for us,” said Mowbray, who has been looking to sign the Ghanaian international for a number of seasons. “Albert is a creative wide player who can go up and down the right wing and cause teams problems with his speed and his trickery. He can create chances and he can also drop his shoulder and smash it in the net.”

Adomah joins recent additions Dean Whitehead, Jozsef Varga and Frazer Richardson as Mowbray looks to improve upon the disappointing finish of 16th from last season.

Middlesbrough head into today’s game off the back of a shock 2-1 home defeat against Accrington Stanley in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday but have happier memories of their last visit to the Valley, where they managed a 4-1 victory.

Charlton head into the game after a 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth in the league but a 4-0 victory over Oxford United in the League Cup.

Manager Chris Powell is once again without suspended midfielder Bradley Pritchard.

Striker Simon Church, who has been called up for international duty for Wales next week, will look for his first league start of the season after scoring a brace in mid-week.

Yann Kermorgant will look to get on the scoresheet again to add to the spectacular goal he scored against Bournemouth.
