The highly-rated 20-year-old, left out of the squad that lost 2-0 to Conference North side FC Halifax Town last night, has been on the radar of several clubs this summer, including at least one from the Premier League.

Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield Town are also understood to have shown an interest in Adams, who has scored 15 goals in 54 appearances for the Blades.

Head coach David Wagner yesterday, however, claimed the Terriers had “done our (transfer) business”, suggesting the Yorkshire outfit are not behind the bid.

The identity of the club who submitted the offer is a mystery, but Chris Wilder last night confirmed to The Yorkshire Post: “It (the bid) did not meet our valuation.”

Adams, who moved to Bramall Lane in November 2014 from Ilkeston, was at The Shay and saw United beaten by late goals from Connor Hughes and Richard Peniket.

It remains to be seen if the unnamed second tier club are willing to increase their offer but Adams could be back in contention for Saturday’s friendly against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

Middlesbrough continued to close in on the capture of Alvaro Negredo last night with the striker set to become the club’s seventh signing of a busy summer.

The Teessiders are thought to have reached an agreement with Negredo’s present club Valencia to take the 30-year-old former Manchester City forward on an initial one-year-loan.

Boro will then reportedly have a £9m option to make the deal permanent next summer.

They face competition from Stoke City, West Ham and Crystal Palace if they are to land Fenerbache striker Robin van Persie.

Hull City have been linked with a move for Reading’s Chris Gunter, said to have a £1.1 m release clause in his contract.
