Guiseley 1 Barrow 0: Jonny Maxted's defiance is crucial for Guiseley

Guiseley got the better of play-off hopefuls Barrow thanks to a solitary strike from Kevan Hurst.

Both sides were looking to hit back after suffering disappointing losses at the weekend.

A heavy downpour left the pitch slick and by the end it became more and more difficult for the ball to move along the ground.

Barrow created the first chance when Ross Hannah was denied by Guiseley goalkeeper Jonny Maxted. The rebound fell to Richie Bennett, but his shot saw Jake Lawlor in the way.

Despite the encouraging start the visitors fell behind when winger Hurst hit an effort that skidded across the turf and beat Jon Flatt to go in off a post.

The home side could have doubled their advantage and Simon Walton’s free-kick from 30 yards looked to be going in, but Flatt read the direction of the ball well and made a smart save.

Guiseley continued to press forward looking for a second, but were nearly caught out when a clever clearance by Shaun Beeley found Bennett, clear on the angle, but he could not direct it on target and it went narrowly wide.

Moussa Diarra was then somehow denied by Maxted. His header from six yards out looked bound to go in with the goalkeeper seemingly going the wrong way, but Maxted clawed a hand onto the ball and tipped it away and Guiseley held on for the win.
