Notts Co 1 Barnsley 1: Reds denied after Winnall’s superb goal

A WONDER goal from Sam Winnall at Meadow Lane was not quite enough to secure Barnsley a first win in seven games.

Lee Johnson’s men were denied by relegation-threatened Notts County and Hungarian substitute Balint Bajner’s crisp finish deep into stoppage time.

The Reds’ play-off hopes have now ended, though not mathematically, after Chesterfield’s six-goal mauling of Colchester.

Barnsley led at the interval thanks to Winnall’s superb ninth-minute opener.

The Reds’ forward brilliantly crashed his shot past Roy Carroll on the volley after meeting a cross from Josh Scowen.

The two sides then traded chances during the remainder of the first period.

Former Barnsley and Bradford midfielder Gary Jones almost evened it up, only for his fiercely-struck shot to strike a post.

Recalled Jabo Ibehre missed a terrific one-on-one opportunity against Carroll before the visitors were thwarted by the woodwork.

Winnall was denied by a post as did Conor Hourihane.

The visitors continued to press for a potentially clinching second goal, with the lively Winnall again going close when he curled a speculative shot narrowly wide.

Another former Red, Paddy McCourt, ought to have levelled, but blasted over from 12 yards.
