Barnsley charged over penalty rage

Exclusive

The Reds have been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following angry scenes at the end of last month's Championship game with Coventry City.

Players surrounded and jostled referee Steven Cook over a decision to award a late penalty to Coventry. Barnsley defenders Rob Kozluk and Bobby Hassell were pushed by stewards who raced onto the pitch.

Barnsley manager Simon Davey felt Cook, 27, should not have been in charge of such a high pressure game – only his second in the Championship.

If Barnsley had won, they would have avoided a final day fight for survival but defender Elliott Ward equalised from the spot-kick to prolong the club's agony.

The FA studied Cook's report and video footage of the incidents before charging Barnsley with failing to control their players and/or officials. They have until May 27 to respond and are facing a fine if found guilty.
