Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday top scorer Tudgay keen to talk to Burnley
SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Brian Laws last night issued a 'hands off' warning to Burnley after the Premier League club offered £1.5m for striker Marcus Tudgay.
Laws is planning to sit down with Tudgay today in an attempt to nail down his services but, according to agent Darryl Powell, the striker is keen to talk to the Clarets.
The former Derby County player, 26, has yet to play top-flight football and will be a free agent next summer if he reneges on a promise to sign a new contract at Hillsborough.
Laws said: "Marcus agreed terms on a new three-year deal some weeks ago and I expect that to be signed in the next few days. This is a desperate move by Burnley to unsettle the player.
"I have spoken to Owen Coyle (Burnley's manager) and I have stressed that it would take a damned sight more money than has been quoted to prise him away.
"It doesn't surprise me that another club is interested. But Marcus is a player I want to build a team around."
Tudgay scored four times against Burnley last season and was the Owls' top marksman with 14 goals.
According to the player's agent, there are disagreements in certain aspects of the proposed new contract which have led to the delay in him signing.
"Everything has not been agreed," said Powell. "If an opportunity arises, Marcus would like to speak to Burnley. That is nothing against Sheffield Wednesday – which is a fantastic football club – but when a Premier League club shows interest, you want to take a look."
The Owls stated that there had been no 'formal offer' for Tudgay from Burnley but Powell insisted that a bid had been submitted.
Defender Rob Kozluk is staying at Barnsley after rejecting the offer of a three-year deal with Crystal Palace.
Former Sheffield United defender Jim Gannon has pipped former Leeds manager Gary McAllister to the vacant manager's job at Motherwell.
