List still growing to succeed Burley

The Scottish Football Association are still in the process of picking a shortlist from a "very impressive" list of applicants for the Scotland manager's job.

Chief executive Gordon Smith believes fans would be pleasantly surprised by some of the interested candidates.

But Smith, who hopes to make an appointment before the European Championship qualifying draw on February 7, confirmed that the new manager could be headhunted.

However, he has been given plenty to think about from those who have made their interest known, a list that includes former Parma manager Nevio Scala, who was on a four-man shortlist before Berti Vogts was appointed in 2002.

When asked if any of the applicants had come as a surprise, Smith said: "I think there are a few of them who come into that category who are actually big names in the game.

"There is no question that there are people who are known to the public and have had great careers, some of them as players and managers.

"It's very impressive in terms of the names that are actually there.

"We're looking at it and some people will be disappointed obviously, if they don't get considered, but we've got a job to do and we have to find the right person. There are a number of people who I think offer the right credentials, so it's not one in particular."

When asked if the manager would come from the list of applicants already known, Smith replied: "Not necessarily, we will be looking at it and maybe we will identify other people ourselves.

The SFA last week cancelled a meeting with the agent of Unirea Urziceni manager Dan Petrescu after details were leaked to the media.

Petrescu, whose agent approached the SFA, is not thought to be a serious contender.

But neither he nor Scala have made any difference to their prospects by announcing their interest in succeeding George Burley, who was sacked four weeks ago.
