Plans for Sheffield United expansion exhibited at Lane
SHEFFIELD United will today reveal plans to turn Bramall Lane into a 44,000-seater stadium.
The Blades may have missed out on promotion to the Premier League after play-off defeat to Burnley last month, but that has not stopped them from pushing ahead with plans to redevelop the Lane.
A Kop revamp scheme is already being reviewed by Sheffield City Council's planners, but now United want to develop the South Stand as well as they look to be part of the city's bid to be a potential 2018 World Cup venue.
South Stand plans include:
An additional tier of seating increasing the capacity by more than 6,000
A purpose built exhibition and conference centre within the stand
New facilities for supporters including additional corporate facilities
Affordable private housing
Additional commercial and banqueting facilities.
Special exhibitions, when there will be opportunities to view the plans and see computer generated images of the future look of the stadium, will be held today and Wednesday in the John Street stand.
The first phase development plans – taking ground capacity up to 37,000 – includes removing the columns on the Kop, a new concourse providing modern kiosks and toilet facilities, new executive boxes, community and educational facilities, as well as improved facilities for disabled supporters which will be built in the Corner Stand.
Also included is a second business enterprise centre between the Kop and South Stand.
United chief executive, Jason Rockett, said: "We are keen to receive the views of the local community and our fans.
"The second stage plans are exciting not only for United but for the city and the areas near to the stadium.
"The second phase is part of a long-term strategy, subject to achieving success on the pitch, aimed at generating additional income off-the-field which we have already seen with the development of the hotel and the business centre.
"We believe our plans for the stadium will meet the criteria of a Sheffield bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup which as a club we are committed to supporting," added Rockett.
The public consultations will be held today and Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7.30pm in the Marston's Suite in the John Street Stand at the stadium.
In addition, an exhibition of the plans will be held in the John Street stand until Friday, from 9am to 5pm.
