FORMER Welsh international Gary Speed has confirmed his retirement as a player after signing a one-year deal to stay on the backroom staff at Sheffield United.
Speed, 39, made over 800 senior appearances during a career that started with Leeds United and included spells at Everton, Newcastle United, and Bolton Wanderers before his move to Bramall Lane two seasons ago.
"I can still take part and play in training, no problem, but I have been out so long that I have lost the sharpness and spring that a player needs at this level," he said.
"Everyone knows that I was always interested in coaching and management and I am thoroughly enjoying things here.
"The gaffer (Kevin Blackwell) and Sam Ellis (assistant manager) bring so much experience and knowledge to the table and they keep me very much involved."
Veteran defender Darren Moore, meanwhile, is wanted by Burton Albion after being released by Barnsley.
Nottingham Forest have completed the permanent signing of midfielder Radoslaw Majewski on a three-year deal.
The Reds have paid Polonia Warsaw 1m for the 23-year-old, who has been on a season-long loan at the City Ground.
Forest boss Billy Davies said: "He is an excellent young player and at his age and with his ability, he will only get better. "
Majewski has scored four goals in 34 matches this season.
Derby County will not be offering new contracts to defender Jay McEveley and winger Gary Teale.
The duo will see their existing deals expire at the end of June.
