Scunthorpe United 1 Barnsley 0: Kick in the teeth, admits manager Robins as Tykes old boy Hayes strikes to signal Cup exit
BARNSLEY manager Mark Robins was disappointed with his players after seeing them slump to their first defeat in nine games at Scunthorpe.
The Tykes crashed out of the FA Cup as Paul Hayes netted the only goal in the third-round tie at Glanford Park.
"This was a competition I really wanted to go further in," said Robins. "I'm disappointed, we never really seemed to get going.
"We didn't reach the standards which we have been setting ourselves in recent games.
"I don't really know why, perhaps it was over-confidence from the players.
"When you get that, this game has a habit of kicking you in the teeth and that's what's happened to us today.
"We had enough chances to have at least earned a replay but we did not work hard enough to get the result we wanted."
Barnsley were sunk by a goal after 68 minutes from old boy Hayes, who scored at Oakwell when the two sides met in the Championship earlier this season.
He pounced at the far post to convert a cross from strike partner Jonathan Forte for his seventh goal of the season, ghosting in to tuck the ball home from 12 yards out.
Earlier, Scunthorpe had missed good chances when Garry Thompson and Forte failed to find the target and former York player Martyn Woolford hit over from just outside the area.
Barnsley, who reached the semi-finals the season before last, also missed a golden opportunity to get back on level terms when striker Daniel Bogdanovic finished wastefully after working himself a good opening 19 minutes from time.
Substitute Jon Macken also made some space late on but shot straight at a grateful Josh Lillis from 25 yards and Scunthorpe held on to progress to the fourth round.
It was a perfect return to football for Scunthorpe centre-back Kenny Milne, who came on at half-time for his first game in 17 months after recovering from a career-threatening knee injury. He replaced injury-hit captain Rob Jones.
"I'm delighted for Kenny," said manager Nigel Adkins, whose side reached the fourth round for the first time in six years. "He has gone through in the last 17 months what no player should have to. He's had two operations on his knee and worked so hard.
"He was on the bench because of a number of injuries which we have. For us, it's a great start to a new year and a great start to a new decade."
