Sharp's edge puts him back under the spotlight

DONCASTER Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll admits he is concerned Billy Sharp's scoring form will see his loan spell at the club end prematurely.

The Sheffield United striker, farmed out following a poor return last season, has scored five goals in the last eight games.

Sharp has undoubtedly re-discovered his touch but O'Driscoll accepts that could lead to fresh interest from other clubs in the January transfer window.

"Billy was a big-money signing so Sheffield United are not going to let him go cheaply," he said, of the 2m forward, who may also yet be recalled by the injury-hit Blades.

"We'd love to keep him for the season but if that's not the case then at least his loan period has helped everyone concerned.

"It will have helped Billy get his career back on track, it will have helped Sheffield United, and he's helped us, so we can't complain."

Rotherham United manager Ronnie Moore is delighted with the impact of in-form striker Adam Le Fondre.

He labelled the signing from Rochdale as "one of the best strikers in League Two" after his brace saw off Lincoln on Tuesday night.

Le Fondre, who took his season's tally to 14, also missed a glorious opportunity to net a treble and Moore said: "He is getting hungry for goals. That's the first time this season he has got two in a game.

"His hat-trick didn't happen but he is going to get one this season because he is a massive threat."

Rangers are the latest club showing an interest in Huddersfield Town's young goalkeeper Alex Smithies.

Premier League Stoke City are in the running for the 3m-rated goalkeeper but they could face competition from the Scottish club.

Town manager Lee Clark, however, is under no pressure to sell the England Under-19 international, whose career has long been monitored by Chelsea.

Burnley have signed Republic of Ireland Under-17 centre-back Neil Yadolahi from Dublin-based club St Kevin's Boys.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has laughed off Dave Whelan's suggestion that Wigan's 9-1 thumping at Tottenham was his fault.

The Latics chairman claimed current manager Roberto Martinez had inherited "a few dodgy signings" after he replaced Bruce at the helm.

Bruce said: "I saw the quotes from Dave Whelan. I could respond but I'm not going to because I don't want it to blow up into something it doesn't have to be.

"I had a great relationship with the Wigan chairman and the one thing he was good at was always trying to protect the manager whenever possible, so I haven't taken offence at what was said.
