Sheffield United midfielder misses out on Swansea job, but Blades land Williamson

SHEFFIELD United player-coach Gary Speed has missed out on the vacant manager's job at Swansea City.

Former Portuguese international Paulo Sousa, who quit QPR at the end of the season, has verbally accepted a three-year deal with the Swans and

is likely to be unveiled next week

Swans chairman Huw Jenkins said "Taking into account the development of the football club over the last two and a half years, and the image we have portrayed as a footballing side, myself and the board of directors felt it was vital to continue along the same lines.

"It was felt Paulo Sousa is the right man to do this. He is young, bright, enthusiastic and a visionary with extensive knowledge and contacts not only throughout Europe, but world football."

And as the Yorkshire Post exclusively revealed last weekend, the Blades have bolstered their midfield options with the signing of Watford midfielder Lee Williamson.

The former Rotherham United man joins Bramall Lane for an undisclosed fee.
