Wembley triumph beats my promotion with Bradford City - Robbie Blake

ROBBIE BLAKE believes helping Burnley into the Premier League even eclipses doing the same with Bradford City 10 years earlier.

The veteran striker is in his second spell at Turf Moor and played an integral part in the Clarets' triumph over Sheffield United in front of 80,518 fans yesterday.

It was the second time Blake had won promotion to the top flight with the striker having been a key member of the Bradford side that finished as runners-up to Sunderland in 1999.

The Burnley striker said: "To get where we are is a fantastic achievement, and probably the best in my career.

"I came up with Bradford when we were expected to do well so this is a bit different.

"(Manager) Owen Coyle deserves tremendous credit, he is so enthusiastic and he believes in us so much as individuals and as a team.

"We have played 61 games, had a cup run and now we have gone up at Wembley. It can't get any better."

Burnley's triumph at Wembley meant it was a case of third time lucky for Blake in the play-offs after previous disappointments with Darlington and Leeds United.

In 1996, he was in the Darlington side beaten in the Third Division final at the old Wembley by Plymouth Argyle. Ten years later it was the turn of the Elland Road club to suffer play-off misery with a 3-0 defeat to Watford in the Championship final.

Blake said: "We had belief all week long that we would do it. We had confidence in our ability and we had the players to score goals at any moment. That has been the case all season long and has been a reason why we have done so well.

"We had a couple of chances to finish it off – it would have been good to get a second goal but one was enough. We thoroughly deserved the victory."
