Leon Best lauds '˜rare' bond between Rotherham United's players

The much-travelled forward is playing his part in the Millers’ quest to avoid relegation.

He struck twice after coming off the bench in Saturday’s remarkable 3-3 draw with former club Derby County. It was the first time that Best, 29, had scored twice in a game since netting for Sheffield Wednesday in a 4-2 win at Bournemouth in April 2014.

Rotherham came from 3-0 down with just seven minutes left to draw against the Rams, arguably the Football League’s comeback of the season, which spoke volumes about the togetherness being fostered under new manager Neil Warnock.

Best says an identical collective resolve served Newcastle well during their Championship title campaign under Chris Hughton in 2009-10.

The Nottingham-born player, who has now played for 11 clubs, including the Millers, said: “It reminds me of the year I went up with Newcastle. All the lads are together.

“It is rare you find that. When you are at clubs, there are normally groups of players or foreigners who stick to their own; not in a malicious way, it’s just what they’re used to.

“Everyone is equal here. Everyone’s the same and will do anything for each other.”

Rotherham’s training facilities are not up there with some of those Best has sampled in his career, at the likes of former top-flight clubs Derby and Blackburn.

It is a reminder what the Millers are up against, competing against a host of well-heeled sides – and a barometer of how well they are currently faring.

He added: “If you come down to the training ground, it’s not a palace. If I was a fan looking from the outside, I would be proud of the players, proud of what the club is, because it is not made easy for everyone.

“If we carry this on, I think the chairman needs to get a new training ground.”

n Barnsley development squad striker Harry White has joined National One League Boreham Wood on loan for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old scored three goals in seven games in a recent loan spell at Kidderminster.
