Preston v Rotherham United: In-demand Danny Ward out of Millers' final trip

TO label the loyal band of Rotherham United supporters who have backed the club through thin and thin on their travels this term as stoic is putting it mildly.

Without an away triumph all season, the Millers will join a notorious bracket of clubs who have failed to win on their travels in an entire campaign if they do not prevail at Preston on Saturday.

Not too many in the away end will be holding their breath, with Rotherham having taken just one point from 22 away Championship matches in 2016-17.

If they do not win Saturday, their pitiful figure will be the worst number that a second-tier side have picked up away from home since Swansea City secured four points – all draws – in 1983-84.

The Millers will again have to make do without top-scorer Danny Ward tomorrow afternoon, with manager Paul Warne revealing that he fielded a phone call enquiring about his main striker from a rival Championship boss this week.

Warne also confirmed that interest had also been shown from two other clubs regarding Ward, who is likely to leave in the summer, with an informal bid also on the table.

Warne, who has also tabled an offer to loan player Tom Adeyemi, who he is hoping to sign permanently in the summer, said: “The figure involved is not a million miles away from what we were being offered in January. I would expect to get the same money in the summer that was on the table in January.”

Meanwhile, Warne says that he expects Richie Barker to start work as his right-hand man on Tuesday after the Millers made an approach to Charlton Athletic to speak to him.

On Barker, a former Millers striker and team-mate, Warne said: “My assistant manager will start work on Tuesday and will work with the players for the last week and have some input.”
