Scott hoping struggling Rotherham will benefit from Harrad’s arrival
ROTHERHAM United manager Andy Scott has described striker Shaun Harrad as a ‘victim of circumstances’ following his arrival on loan from League One side Bury.
Harrad was one of the most prolific goalscorers outside the top three divisions prior to joining the Shakers last summer – notching 55 goals in three seasons at Burton Albion and Northampton Town.
He is now with the Millers on a one-month loan deal after failing to find the net and losing his place this season at Gigg Lane.
The Millers, who visit third-placed Southend United tonight, are in desperate need of a boost to revive their fading promotion push.
Scott said: “The main thing about Shaun is that he’s a natural goalscorer who is proven at this level. We have bided our time but feel we have got someone in who can enhance the squad.”
The Millers wanted Harrad last season but lost out to Northampton Town in the race for his signature. Although he scored six goals in 18 appearances for the Cobblers, he fell out of favour when manager Gary Johnson lost his job.
“I spoke about him last season but he went to Northampton in a deal that we could not match,” said Scott. “Things didn’t work out great there for Shaun but he still scored one in three.
“He joined Bury last summer but they have now changed formation and are playing with only one striker so he’s not got as many games as he would have liked. He’s been a victim of circumstances.
“He’s honest and hard working and wants to prove a point. He fits in with what we are doing and our style of play will benefit him.”
Southend groundstaff are working hard to ensure tonight’s game goes ahead but there are no guarantees due to snow and ice.
