Scunthorpe v Barnsley: Points will act as Burton’s cv

Caretaker manager Mark Burton hopes positive results will serve as his job application for the vacant manager’s post at Oakwell.

The Reds have remained quiet on appointing a successor to Danny Wilson, who was sacked 12 days ago.

Save for an approach for Swindon’s Mark Cooper that was rebuffed, a reported interest in Oldham’s Lee Johnson and a link to former Sunderland manager Paulo Di Canio, there has been little emanating from the club about who might become the next manager.

So it falls upon the head of the club’s academy, Burton, to make his case.

He began with a miserable 5-1 defeat at Crawley 10 days ago, but having had a week to work with the players, Burton then orchestrated a 2-0 win over bottom-half rivals Crewe on Saturday.

“I don’t need to apply, results will be my cv,” said Burton, who is being assisted by former Reds player Paul Heckingbottom.

“I’ve just got to prepare the team the best I can. What will be, will be.

“I’ve just been told to get on with the job at hand and that’s three points at Scunthorpe.

“Patrick (Cryne, owner) and Ben (Mansford, chief executive) will make the right decision.”

Sam Winnall and Peter Ramage are unavailable for tonight’s trip to Scunthorpe.
