Season over for Sheffield United defender

Joe Riley's season is over after the Sheffield United full-back suffered a dislocated shoulder in a freak training ground accident.

The 20-year-old only joined the Blades on loan from Manchester United last month, and was pushing for a first-term berth.

But the defender had a scan in Manchester on Thursday to assess the damage, after stumbling in training and injuring his shoulder.

And the club confirmed after Saturday's 2-0 win over Bolton that Riley will miss the rest of the season.

“We have took a bit of a blow, it was a bit of a freak accident in training,” said Blades boss Chris Wilder.

“He stumbled, tried to keep his balance, and dislocated his shoulder. We are waiting on the results of a scan, he has gone back to Manchester United.

“It’s disappointing for Joe, desperately bad luck, it was something out of nothing in training."

Riley looks to have a promising career ahead of him, having already played for Manchester United in the FA Cup and Europa League.

He came on as a substitute for the Blades in the 1-0 win at Peterborough, and made his full debut in the 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers nine days ago.

Wilder said: “ He was just getting himself going, played at Bristol Rovers and could be very pleased with his debut.

“He was pushing Kieron Freeman and Danny Lafferty, he was close, so we are disappointed.”
