Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins was left to wonder how his side lost this after Bury snatched a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane in League One.
The Blades struggled to break down a dogged Bury defence in the first 45 minutes, Connor Sammon seeing his header blocked on the line.
Against the run of play, the visitors took the lead when substitute Tom Pope pounced afterpoor defending.
United levelled when Billy Sharp converted a penalty in front of the Kop and the Blades looked likely to grab a winner.
But Joe Riley’s superb long-range strike put Bury in front, and with United chasing the game, Leon Clarke popped up with an injury-time third for the Shakers.
