Sheffield United 3 Wycombe 0: Hoskins delighted with debut goal for Blades

New Blades signing Will Hoskins.

Sheffield United closed the gap on neighbours Wednesday with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wycombe at Bramall Lane.

Striker Will Hoskins was named a substitute for the Blades after moving on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion while striker James Beattie was still serving a three game ban. Midfielder Nick Montgomery recovered from an ankle injury, but was on the bench.

The Blades started the match well, although failed to trouble Wanderers goalkeeper Nikki Bull.

At the other end, Stuart Beavon had Steve Simonsen in the Blades goal scrambling but his long-range effort went wide of the post.

Matt Bloomfield was booked for diving when he fell in proximity to Harry Maguire as the Wycombe midfieder made a rare break forward.

United went in scoreless at half-time, Danny Wilson bringing on Ryan Flynn as the Blades kicked towards the Kop end.

Richard Cresswell headed into the Kop from a superb cross from Harry Maguire, and that was the striker’s last act as Hoskins was introduced on the hour.

And the former Rotherham United striker showed his predatory instincts to fire home from six yards to break the deadlock.

Ched Evans then doubled United’s advantage, twisting his marker before stroking the ball home.

Kevin McDonald added the icing on the cake in stoppage time with a deflected effort which looped into the net.

Hoskins was delighted to have scored on his debut.

“I think today we grinded it out, got the ball in the right areas and in the end the goals came and the win,” he said.

“It was a perfect predator’s goal. They were a bit flat-footed, I was fresh and managed to sneak in behind and get the goal.”

The win leaves United a point behind Wednesday but with two games in hand.
