The Blades’ manager steadfastly lives in the here and now, even though many Unitedites will no doubt be rankled that their side’s solid recent form has probably arrived too late for a concerted play-off charge.

Adkins’s side head into tonight’s game at relegation-threatened Shrewsbury with a six-point gap between themselves and sixth-placed Gillingham, with a haul of seven points from nine having, in all likelihood, come too late in the day with just four games left.

Adkins is just grateful that his side are a lot more settled these days with the continuity in selection starting to be reflected in terms of results, which augurs well for next season.

On the Blades’ form, Adkins said: “People say it is too little too late, but it is better late than never.

“The performances have been good, and coming, and there’s a camaraderie and work ethic about everyone and we look like we are going to score in the majority of games.”
