SHEFFIELD United manager Nigel Adkins has bridled at talk that wearing the captain’s armband is affecting Jay McEveley’s performances.
The Blades’ leader made two mistakes in Saturday’s surprise 3-1 loss to Bury at Bramall Lane, but has received the full backing of his manager, who says the responsibility is in no way putting a strain on Frecklington’s game.
Adkins, whose side can shrug off the weekend blow against the Shakers by moving back up to third if they triumph tonight, said: “It is not affecting him at all.
“I gave Jay the armband because he has been exemplary on the training ground and while people always see what he does on the field of play, it’s what you do around the football club as well and he has been good.
“We have got a leadership group and it is not just one person having the armband, but several people.
“Jay made a couple of mistakes at the weekend and got punished in a big way and we have had an honest conversation about it.
“I suppose at every football club somebody gets highlighted and maybe at this moment in time, Jay is the one who is getting highlighted.
“But I think everyone will see that I look after the players as much as I can.”
Jose Baxter is available again following suspension, with Paul Coutts, Bob Harris, Matty Done and John Brayford still missing.
