Sheffield Wednesday capture Hornets pair Daniel Pudil and Almen Abdi

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY'S recruitment ahead of the new season stepped up a gear last night with the capture of Watford duo Daniel Pudil and Almen Abdi on permanent deals.

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal had been keen to strengthen his squad after swooping for Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher and Norwich City goalkeeper Jake Kean earlier this month.

Pudil made 42 appearances for Wednesday last term on loan from the Hornets, while Abdi was a regular in the Premier League.

The capture of the 29-year-old attacking midfielder is a real sign of intent.

Abdi spent four years at Vicarage Road and netted 24 times in 115 league appearances. He missed just six league games last term as Watford finished in mid-table.

Meanwhile, Gary Rowett has reiterated his loyalty to Birmingham City amid continued links with Hull City’s vacancy.

The Tigers met Roberto Martinez yesterday as part of their plans to speak to all five names on a shortlist drawn up to succeed Steve Bruce.

Rowett had been touted as being of interest but he said yesterday: “Rumours about Fulham, rumours about QPR, rumours about Derby, rumours about Hull yet I am still here talking to you.

“I kind of wish people would maybe give me a little bit of credit as well that I am not just going to have my head turned with every single move.”

Paul Green has moved to League One Oldham Athletic following his departure from Rotherham United at the end of last season.

Former Bradford City winger Kyel Reid has joined Coventry City.

The 28-year-old, who helped the Bantams into the play-offs last term, has signed a two-year deal following his release by Preston North End.
