The midweek signing from Watford netted after slick passing through the Owls midfield, and nearly added a second but hit the post.

Wednesday took the lead with a towering header from centre-back Tom Lees in the first half, tucking away Ross Wallace’s corner, before Fernando Forestieri pounced after the break.

Afterwards, Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal revealed his delight at landing Watford pair Daniel Pudil and Abdi.

“These are two players I have wanted since the beginning,” he said. “They are both hard working for the team which is exactly the sort of player we want at Sheffield Wednesday.

“Daniel was here last season it’s easier for him to learn the process.

“Abdi is a good player and was our first choice to bring in for that position and he will have to fight like everyone to get into the team.”

Goals from Josh Scowen and Stefan Payne either side of half-time saw Barnsley beat Peterboprrough United 2-0.

The win pleased Reds head coach Paul Heckingbottom

He said: “The two things that really pleased me is how competitive the game was, so it was good to be stretched and there was a real edge to the game. It’s worked out perfect for us that Peterborough had a real go.

“From the two centre forwards working their socks off, to the full-backs, everyone has had a test like what they will come up against next week.

“They had a right go at us and we stuck in and managed to keep a clean sheet.”

Goals from Filipe Morais and James Hanson gave Bradford City a 2-0 win over Carlisle United.
