Sheffield Wednesday striker Atdhe Nuhiu has not given up hope of gatecrashing next summer’s European Championships.

The 26-year-old was a regular at Under-21 level for the Austrian national team, but has so far failed to earn a full call-up.

The 6ft 6ins striker has a growing fan club in the Championship – he has netted 22 goals in 73 starts since joining on a free transfer in 2013.

And Nuhiu hopes helping the Owls’ push for promotion to the Premier League – they sit a point off the play-offs ahead of today’s trip to strugglers Charlton – can catch the eye of Austria national coach Marcel Koller.

“I played for the Under-21s in Austria and did very well,” he said. “Of course, I would like to a call-up to the full international team.

“I think I have done very well for them to have a look at me. But I cannot influence that decision, and which type of player he (the coach) choses. I can help the Austrian national team.

“What I can do is to continue the way that I am working, and if the coach picks me, I am ready. It’s his decision.”

Charlton sit second-bottom, with just two wins from 15 games, but Nuhiu is refusing to take the Addicks lightly.

He said: “We want to achieve a good result, but I think Charlton is a very tough place to go. It will be a difficult game, as is every game in this league.

“They are near the bottom and fighting for every point. It will be one of the toughest games we have had. But I am sure we will be very prepared for the game.

“We have more players here now than we have had in the last two years, players with quality, and that makes the difference.

“We cannot stop, because now we have won nothing.”

Owls striker Lucas Joao has been called up by Portugal.
